“Who are you without the doing?” is one of the most powerful questions I’ve ever been asked. So powerful that I wrote an entire episode of Hurry Slowly about wrestling with it.

Today, I sit down with the woman who asked me that question. From her perch in the Southwestern United States, she has guided thousands of people on healing journeys with the aid of the ayahuasca plant, and she has also been an incredibly positive and transformative influence in my life personally.

In this conversation, we talk about how to get at the root of who you are (without the doing), why healing yourself is an “inside job,” and how to shift from a neurotic, fear-based way of operating to a joy- or presence-based way of moving through the world.

Key takeaways from this meditation:

  • Why self-love is one of the foundations of transformation
  • How to operate out of presence rather than fear
  • Why coming back into the body soothes anxious thoughts
  • How to answer the question: “who are you without the doing?”

“There’s a practice called neti neti in Sanskrit, which means not this, not this, not this. So it’s questioning who you think you are, who you thought you were, and continuously going deeper. It can be a lifetime practice because we all get identified with various things at various times. Like, I’m a musician or I’m an artist or well that’s true, but you’re more than that.”

“I truly believe that it doesn’t matter what you do. It’s who’s doing it. How much love are you bringing, or consciousness are bringing to everything you do, or anything you do? That’s hard for people to hear because we do get very identified with what we’re doing.”

“I think all work that is healing has to do with being more free, more connected, and ending your own suffering in some way.”
